Having discovered that their commanding officer was married to a Jew, Goering commanded a red band of shame be painted round each aircraft's nose. Later in 1940, when Von Cramon Taubadel was removed from his post this red band was removed. However, in protest, all the men painted out the swastika on their aircraft's tail.
